Textbooks for an industrial engineer, particularly with the concentration leads to production engineering. The author is Professor of Industrial And Systems Engineering from Lehigh University. Mikell P Groover. Publisher is Pearson in 2008, and the book has been entered in the third edition. In the prefix and Chapter 1 of this book, the author tries to give an overview and definition of what it is in general production systems and manufacturing systems. Chapter 2 will attempt an explanation detailing what the manufacturing system. Next is a pretty interesting discussion on the science of Industrial Engineering, namely Automation and Control Technology (including outlines of the CAD / CAM). Manufacturing systems can not be separated from the material handling system. Therefore, the authors also make a special chapter to provide examples of concepts and real about it. In the end, there is an explanation of Quality Control (Quality Control) in any manufacturing system that includes the type of Manufacturing Support System.
The first edition of this book is actually published in 1980 when the Department of Industrial Engineering has not so much in Indonesia. Prof.Groover manufactur explained that the term comes from the Latin. Which is composed of two words; Manus (hand) and factus (make). Its history began in the country Inddris in 1567 (page 41). Appears the term of handicraft enterprises. The development of manufacturing can not be separated from the production system. Since the manufacturing system has a wider scope than just the production system. And management of production systems should not merely a matter of 'knowledge management'. It just feels not enough. Because what better way is with a systemic approach and modeling.
